Transforming heart care for patients across Bradford

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Bradford Hospitals Charity has funded a £44,000 OneStim™ Cardiac Stimulator System, helping transform care for patients with serious heart rhythm disorders at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The new technology is enhancing how pacemakers are implanted, improving outcomes for patients while helping clinicians deliver more precise and effective treatment.

Advancing cardiac care

Each year, around 190 patients receive a pacemaker at Bradford Teaching Hospitals. While pacemakers are life-changing devices, some patients can develop complications over time. In England, up to one in five people with a pacemaker may develop pacing-induced heart failure within five years.

The OneStim system helps reduce this risk by allowing cardiologists to place pacemaker leads more accurately within the heart's natural electrical conduction system. This enables the heart to beat in a more natural way, supporting better long-term heart function.

Consultant Cardiologist Dr Jivendra Gosai said: "This technology allows us to target the heart's natural electrical system more accurately, improving long-term outcomes and reducing complications."

The system also makes procedures more efficient, helping reduce procedure times and allowing more patients to be treated.

Made possible by charity support

The cardiology team first experienced the benefits of the technology while using loaned equipment and quickly recognised the difference it could make for patients.

Dr Gosai explained: "We had seen excellent results while loaning the equipment and knew we needed it. Bradford Hospitals Charity made that happen."

By funding the OneStim system, supporters have enabled the team to bring this innovative technology to Bradford permanently, ensuring local patients can benefit from the latest advances in cardiac care.

John's story

One of the first patients to benefit from the new system was John, 88, from Oxenhope.

John was referred to the cardiology team after suffering blackouts caused by his heart stopping for several seconds at a time. Using the new equipment, clinicians were able to implant a pacemaker designed to help restore a safe and reliable heart rhythm.

Following the procedure, John was able to return home safely to continue his recovery.

Supporting patients and the NHS

Heart failure accounts for around 5% of all emergency medical admissions, placing significant demands on NHS resources.

By helping to prevent pacing-induced heart failure and related complications, the OneStim system has the potential to reduce future hospital admissions and ongoing treatment costs, benefiting both patients and the wider healthcare system.

Creating a lasting legacy

The OneStim Cardiac Stimulator System is another example of how charitable funding can make a direct and lasting difference to patient care.

Thanks to the kindness of our donors and supporters, patients like John now have access to advanced pacing technology close to home—delivering safer, more effective treatment and improving outcomes for years to come.

Together, we're helping to transform heart care for patients across Bradford and beyond.
