Shared memory events
Shared Memories Events provide a meaningful opportunity for reflection, remembrance, and connection with others for families who have experienced the profound loss of a child.
Held twice a year, these events bring together parents, carers, and siblings to honour the memories of babies and children who have passed away. Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner Lisa Smith describes the purpose of these gatherings:
“Our shared memories event is held twice a year to remember babies and children who have died. The event is held with both parents/carers and siblings in mind. We have a children and young people’s programme of activities that link in with the theme and chosen story for each event.
“The event is kindly supported by Bradford Hospitals Charity, who help us to provide craft activities to make precious keepsakes. The materials that are funded by the charity help the children and young people to engage in activities that offer opportunities to share their memories or talk about their thoughts and feelings with others who have shared similar experiences.
“The area that is used to tell the story and offer time for reflection has a focus point that is linked with the story. This is usually a themed backdrop where families can add a token such as a heart with their child’s name written on it. There are battery operated candles that are lit, and knitted memorabilia that the families can take home.
“The event has grown over the years with many families wanting to return year after year.
“Without the support of Bradford Hospitals Charity funding, the event could not be as successful as it is. We are very grateful for the support that we receive with planning and being there on the day as well as everything else that goes on behind the scenes to help it be the success it is today – thank you.”
The evidence is in the feedback of how important and valuable the shared memories event is to those who attend. Here are some of the comments captured from the last Shared Memories event:
