Dementia-friendly MP3 speakers

For patients with dementia, hospital stays can often feel isolating and disorienting, especially when they’re in side rooms or have fewer visitors.

Thanks to charitable funding, dementia-friendly MP3 speakers have been introduced at Bradford Royal Infirmary, offering a valuable source of comfort, entertainment, and mental stimulation for these patients.

Paul Street, Falls Improvement Lead for Ward 17, explains the impact:
“I applied to Bradford Hospitals Charity to ask for funding for some dementia friendly MP3 players. These will provide mental stimulation for patients in hospital and some entertainment for patients who may not receive visitors or who are being cared for in a side room. The speakers have music, podcasts and audiobooks on them which can be changed on a regular basis.

“We have been successful in securing 5 of these speakers. The first 2 have been given to Ward 29 (Ward Manager Jacqui Smith pictured below) and to Ward 17 (Ward Manager Shanika Lewis and Matron Andrea Hudson pictured above). The other 3 speakers will be given to other wards in the next few weeks.

“I am very grateful to have received these from the kind donations we have received. The speakers will help to enhance our patients experience, improve mental wellbeing and provide stimulation through the day.”

Through the generous support of Bradford Hospitals Charity, five of these special MP3 speakers are now available, enhancing the hospital experience for patients with dementia across several wards. By supporting the Charity, you’re helping improve the quality of life for vulnerable patients, providing them with engaging resources that support mental well-being and reduce feelings of isolation.

Your donations make it possible to offer comforting, familiar sounds to those in need, bringing moments of joy and connection to patients throughout their hospital stay. Thank you.
