Alex uses pedal power to raise money for children in hospital
Seven-year-old Alex Foxall is on a mission to make a difference to the lives of children in hospital this summer.
Little Alex, of Wibsey, Bradford, has embarked on a 75-mile cycle ride over 30 days to raise money for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity, to fund toys and activities to keep children calm and entertained while in hospital.
The challenge marks the 75th birthday of our NHS – and a tribute to the doctors, nurses, and staff behind the scenes who provide care – but it is also in honour of Alex’s late friend from playgroup, Axl Walker, who sadly died five years ago.
Alex’s mum Louise, the deputy service manager in neurology, care of the elderly and stroke at St Luke’s Hospital, said she and Alex’s dad were incredibly proud of their little boy for wanting to help other children.
Louise explained: “He wants to help the children who spend time in hospital and he’s so enthusiastic. It’s going to be challenging because we will be cycling every day during the school holidays, but he’s ready for the challenge. I’m not sure if his dad and I are as prepared for all the cycling!”
Alex added: “I want the children to forget they are poorly by helping them get new toys.”
Alex’s fundraising challenge is not only a testament to his compassion, but a poignant tribute to his friend Axl, who sadly passed away after spending much of his short life in hospital. Axl’s mum, Claire Walker said: “Toys played such a huge part in helping to support Axl while in hospital, so to have one off his playgroup friends, who he played with so much, raise money to help fund toys is fantastic. Alex is a little superstar who at such a young age, is doing something selfless. This will mean so much to children while in hospital.”
Lisa Williams, Head of Fundraising for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity, said: “Alex is such an inspiration to us all. We are so grateful for his support of Bradford Hospitals’ Charity and feel this is a wonderful tribute to Axl. His determination to complete the 75-mile challenge and raise funds to help children in hospital is wonderful.
“Thank you Alex and good luck with your challenge! We will be cheering you on all the way!”
