Devices to aid families in the pain free administration of injectable medications

For children and young people requiring regular injections, managing pain and anxiety can be challenging.

Thanks to the Buzzy Devices funded by Bradford Hospitals Charity, children in the Paediatric Rheumatology unit now have a tool that helps make their treatment process a little easier.

Paediatric Rheumatology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Charlene Bass-Woodcock shares:
“The Buzzy Devices are an invaluable piece of equipment to our children and young people. Our patients use the Buzzy when they are taking their weekly or fortnightly injections to try ease the pain of the injections. Without these devices I feel compliance with treatment would be quite a challenge and put extra pressure on the families having to cope with the distressed child. The cold wings that come with the Buzzy’s add that extra relief from the pain of the injection.

“We currently have around 12 Buzzy’s which have all been funded through the charity, and the majority are currently out with families. The devices are quite robust, and we are able to re-loan the majority of devices once returned to us, however we do lose some over time due to breakages or families losing them at home. The fact we can turn to the charity for support in purchasing more when needed means we can continue to make these injections more bearable for lots more children in the future.”
