Books to help support children through having a parent who is critically unwell

Having a parent in critical condition can be deeply confusing for children and young people. Recognising a gap in the resources available for young families, the ICU team have introduced specially selected books to help children understand and cope with the experience.

ICU Family Liaison Sister Max Mallinson shares the significance of these resources: “From our perspective…These books where essential in filling a gap I felt was evident in our care for young families, we already provided bereavement boxes, handprint kits, knitted hearts, etc. But I felt there was no immediate help when a patient is admitted to prepare young families for what may come should the worst happen despite all our best efforts.

“These books were requested in an attempt to give families practical guidance when someone is seriously ill, tools on how to tackle the minefield of child trauma and bereavement support. Enabling families to speak to children and young people in a way that makes them able to express their thoughts and feelings through the use of activities and suggestions, as well as a resource of future support.

“We cannot thank the fundraising teams enough for enabling us to provide these invaluable resources.”
