Paediatric physiotherapist Alison Pyke hopes to makes waves and cash when she takes part in this year’s national Swimathon.

Alison, who is based at St Luke’s Hospital in Bradford, will swim 5K to raise cash for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity on Friday 27 April. More than 500 swimming pools across the UK are expected to take part this year to raise money for charity, making it the world’s largest annual fundraising swim.

“I enjoy a challenge and raising money for this excellent cause will help motivate me to keep going!” said Alison. “Last year I completed 5K in one hour and 45 minutes, so I’d love to beat that time!”

Alison treats children aged up 18 who are suffering from anything from broken bones to symptoms associated with disabilities. She said she chose Bradford Hospitals’ Charity because it has invested so much in children’s areas around Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and she would like to see them boosted even more. She said she would love the Child Development Centre to benefit from enhancements, which is where she treats her young patients.

“I chose Bradford Hospitals’ Charity because it’s local,” said Alison. “Health is important to us all and to know that the money will be going to enhance local health service provision makes it worthwhile. Myself and colleagues are keen to help enhance children’s experiences in hospital, be that through the environment or buying extra toys and specialist equipment.”

Hayley Collis, Head of Fundraising for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity, said: “We are so grateful to Alison for taking on this tough swimming challenge. Fundraising like this helps raise a little smile for our younger patients, many of whom spend a great deal of time in hospital and visiting health professionals like Alison. Please support Alison by donating what you can.”
